Stretchable Electronics: An Overview

Stretchable electronics is an emerging field of technology focused on the development of electronic systems that can bend, twist, stretch, and conform to irregular surfaces without losing functionality. Unlike traditional rigid electronics, stretchable electronics are designed to integrate seamlessly with soft, flexible, and dynamic environments, such as the human body, textiles, and curved industrial components. This capability opens new possibilities for next-generation wearable devices, biomedical systems, and smart materials.

Core Concept and Design Principles

The key principle behind stretchable electronics lies in combining electrical performance with mechanical flexibility. This is achieved through innovative material choices and structural designs. Common approaches include the use of elastomeric substrates, such as silicone or polyurethane, and conductive materials like liquid metals, conductive polymers, nanowires, and graphene. In many cases, rigid electronic components are arranged in wavy, serpentine, or mesh-like patterns that allow them to stretch without breaking.
